Volunteers Needed for Local Tree Census
Sustainable Jersey City (SJS) is looking for volunteers to take part in round three of its Jersey City 2020 Tree Mapping Census. This climate change initiative is a step toward restoring the city’s tree canopy to 40 percent coverage—the ideal amount for Jersey’s City’s size and climate zone. Volunteers will be asked to participate in a virtual “citizen scientist” training on August 11.
Tree mapping can be done solo, with a partner or with kids when families go out to get some air. To volunteer, sign up online at SustainableJC.org (click on Projects) and register for the August 11 WebEx training—a primer on the importance of urban tree-canopy health and on using OpenTreeMap on a smartphone. Then download the GroupMe text app to stay in touch with your neighborhood captain. (Volunteers will be sent an email with their neighborhood GroupMe link right after the training.)
Neighborhood captains will guide volunteers through the tree-inventory process, which involves recording GPS locations of trees, tree metrics and health data, and tree species ID photos.
