Matcha on the Menu at The Grind Shop
Since it opened in Bergen-Lafayette, The Grind Shop has invigorated coffee culture in Jersey City. Now it’s boosting the city’s natural-health culture too, with matcha drinks on the menu.
Matcha is a powder made from green tea leaves, and like green tea, it’s a superfood. Studies of matcha and its components have unearthed a variety of benefits, showing that it can help protect the liver, promote heart health and even aid in weight loss. One serving of matcha tea is thought to be the nutritional equivalent of 10 cups of regularly brewed green tea.
Originally from China, matcha is grown in the shade alongside green tea bushes to ensure an increased chlorophyll content, which makes the leaves bright green and packed with nutrients. The leaves are hand-picked, the stems and veins are removed, and then the leaves are ground on a stone to get a powder used in drinks, desserts and cocktails.
