Creative Summer Camp at Luna de Papel
Creative kids can register to attend summer camp at Luna de Papel, a handcrafting art studio in Jersey City. Owner Ruth Salas says the benefits of encouraging creativity in kids go way beyond keeping them busy.
“When children learn to create, they learn that they can control their environment, and that builds a tremendous amount of self-esteem,” she says. “Our goal is to build self-esteem through self-expression that is more approachable, authentic and sustainable than simple art.”
The studio will offer three summer sessions between June 21 and September 6. Days run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with early- and extended-day options. Activities include weaving, felting, embroidery, painting, knitting and crochet, among others, plus gardening in the studio’s new outdoor space.
“Children today are used to instant gratification, and this can stifle the ability to strive for longer-term goals,” Salas says. “Handcrafts take commitment, but they teach children that they can achieve great things if they take them one step at a time.”
